Your first Captain’s Drill

Start with one serious assignment. It is simple, but it matters.

Write your 100-word answer

Answer this question in exactly 100 words:

Why do you want to become a firefighter?

Remove anything that sounds like hero fantasy, schedule chasing, adrenaline, or generic public-service language.

Why 100 words?

This is not about memorizing a perfect script. It is about learning to build a disciplined interview answer.

When spoken calmly, 100 words usually takes about 45 to 60 seconds. That gives you enough room to answer the question, support your answer, and finish with confidence without rambling. Firefighter interviews reward candidates who are direct, organized, honest, and professional.

Then improve it

  • Make it honest.
  • Make it specific.
  • Connect it to service, responsibility, and preparation.
  • Show maturity without trying to sound perfect.
  • Keep it clear enough to say out loud in an oral board.

Captain Dave’s rule

We are not training you to sound rehearsed. We are training you to answer under control. If you can give a clear 100-word answer, you can later expand it, shorten it, or adapt it to the question in front of you.
